Due to COVID-19, Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS) of Bridgewater, NJ has adjusted their teaching to both remote and hybrid schedules. However recently, a decision was made to switch students to a synchronous schedule on days in which they are not physically in school. The decision for this however was not made by students and staff, but instead it was made on our behalf by parents and administrators. The students at SCVTHS, as well as students across the globe, have had their lives changed due to the ongoing pandemic. Many parents are out of work, or putting in extra hours just to make ends meet. Students may have extra responsibilities at home or work. The new synchronous schedule puts a strain on students. They are no longer able to complete work when they have the time to, but instead are required to attend daily Zoom classes at the same time as the students in school are. While the need for education is understood, students cannot be expected to spend hours a day in front of their screens, while the teacher addresses their in-person class. Teachers cannot be expected to teach both classes at a time, while also supervising students and disinfecting between classes. because of the pressure of teachers having to address both online and in-person classes, students' quality of education is severely diminished. By alleviating students and teachers from the hindrance of synchronous learning, we would be reducing pressure on students, improving their mental health. The current state of the pandemic is increasingly stressful for students. Dealing with the rise of COVID cases, the losses of loved ones, and the increased workload on students, the expectation for students to spend more time behind a screen is detrimental to us. The concern of parents and administration regarding student performance is valid, however, allowing students more time to work on assignments by alleviating some of the time spent on Zoom classes is beneficial to all parties involved. As students, we believe that synchronous learning should be repealed, and SCVTHS should return to a hybrid schedule.
