Some things are worth getting mad about!

Earlier this week, our recently inaugurated Governor submitted a plan to balance our state budget.

The Governor soberly reported his plan to eliminate 260 more jobs, cut salaries by another 2% and slash our schools by another $500 per pupil.  This year our state will have to cut $1.2 BILLION from our state budget.  In the past three years we have cut $5 BILLION out of our budget.

His proposal is one that aims only to cut our way out of this revenue crisis. In reality we have been divesting in our state programs so much that we are at the bottom of the country for funding in all areas – education, health care, transportation, etc.

Year after year we find ourselves back in this situation.  This is not sustainable, and the Governor provided no options for solving our revenue crisis but he admitted that we have had flat revenue and flat job growth for a decade.   Further, he ruled out progressive options like asking the wealthy to pay their fair share in taxes.

We have decades of fiscal policies that have created this situation and to his credit the Governor stated that our spending and tax issues have been building up for years.

At the Colorado Progressive Coalition we believe it is time for the people of Colorado to have a serious conversation about the kind of state they want to live in.

Do we want a Colorado where we are forced to fire thousands of teachers from schools?  Where our colleges are not accessible to all Coloradans?  Where we ask seniors to pay more in property taxes?  Where we sacrifice basic health care services?

Sign the petition – tell the Governor that it time for real solutions that don’t hurt Colorado communities.

Letter to
Governor John Hickenlooper
Colorado Governor
Earlier this week, you reported your plan to eliminate 260 more jobs, cut salaries by another 2% and slash our schools by another $500 per pupil. This year our state will have to cut $1.2 BILLION from our state budget. In the past three years we have cut $5 BILLION out of our budget.

You stated that our tax and spending issues have been building up for years. We have decades of fiscal policies that have created this situation.

The members of the Colorado Progressive Coalition believe it is time for the people of Colorado to have a serious conversation about the kind of state we want to live in.

Do we want a Colorado where we are forced to fire thousands of teachers from schools? Where our colleges are not accessible to all Coloradans? Where we ask seniors to pay more in property taxes? Where we sacrifice basic health care services?

You admitted that this is a painful and difficult process, and you are right! Our communities are experiencing PAIN and it will be very DIFFICULT for them this year as they continue to bear the burden of our state budget shortfalls on their backs!

Year after year we find ourselves back in this situation. You stated that we have had flat revenue and flat job growth for a decade. This is not sustainable! Governor, it is time to start looking at options for solving our revenue crisis through progressive options like asking the wealthy to pay their fair share in taxes.
