Sean O`Hara started this petition to Solent University and

Make final exams/assignments optional for students. Students should be able to choose to take their current mark for this academic year ‘as it is’ or complete additional exams/ assignments if they are able/want to improve their mark.
The University should understand that we do not consider blanket extensions, ‘lenient marking’ or online examinations suitable mitigation for the terror we are facing. Top educational institutes like the University of Southampton have already adopted a similar approach.
Many students will find themselves in environments unconducive with studying. Lack of university facilities is significantly impacting students’ academic potential. Meanwhile, mental and physical illnesses caused and exacerbated by the impacts of Covid-19 further deprive students of demonstrating their full capabilities.
As a result, due to these uncertain and challenging times, giving students this option would be extremely beneficial. Although students have been given the option to defer/extend examinations, some have essential prior commitments, such as work placements, travel plans and family commitments etc. These cannot take a backseat to the time and effort needed for exam revision and assignment preparation. Therefore, deferring examinations may only hinder results and pre-agreed commitments and plans.
Many of the top universities in the country have implemented the discussed solution. Solent University must understand that in such unprecedented times, such measures need to be taken in place to allow for students to be able to cope with the stress and rapid change and also a solution for the University to be able to move forward as a whole.
