Solent University students started this petition to Solent Univeristy

UPDATE: Solent students have been reassured that the no detriment policy measures will be amended if there is a significant change in national circumstances. However, despite a national lockdown being put into place on 04/01/21, the university has not amended the no detriment policy to support their students effectively throughout the current national lockdown. The 'no detriment - phase two' policy currently in place is not as effective as the original implemented between March - September 2020. The 'phase two' still does not offer students sufficient support and reassurance that their grades will not be affected by the pandemic.

Throughout the pandemic, students at Solent university have been expected to produce the same quality of work despite the majority of courses being shifted to online learning. When the pandemic broke out last academic year, students were reassured that their university grades would not suffer as a result, due to the implementation of a no detriment policy. This policy meant that students could not receive a lower grade than the one they were currently working towards.

However, this year students have received no reassurance that their overall degree grade will not suffer. On top of online learning, students' mental health has suffered as a result of isolation and lockdown away from loved ones. In addition, many students and their families have contracted COVID-19 - resulting in higher levels of stress and anxiety, or not being able to take part in learning due to illness or bereavement. Students are expected to pay full tuition fees despite the majority of courses being delivered as online only, meaning a subsequent decrease in the quality of lectures/seminars. Student houses are commonly shared among 4-8 other students, who are all online learning alongside each other. Because of this, WiFi and technological issues are often another barrier for students when accessing online learning.

Students are expected to produce the same quality of work as previous years, despite the circumstances being significantly more difficult. Solent students' mental health, access to online learning and lack of face to face teaching has not been considered as a reason for implementing an effective and fair policy so far. This petition requests the implementation of a no detriment policy with the same terms as the original offered between March - September 2020.
