Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary School

Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco, came to the SISD family in 1985; his tenure with Socorro began as a Security Guard.  Mr. Carrasco began his career with SISD providing safety and security for our then twelve schools and nearly 10,000 students.  He spent most of his time involved with students at Socorro High School when students from the Montwood area were still bused to the campus.  The district began to expand and new campuses began being built; Montwood HS was built and became only the second high school in the district. Our student population then nearly doubled in size and with the increase came different needs.  Mr. Carrasco moved into providing our districts students and community with education in attendance as he became an Attendance Officer, also known as “truant” officers in the early 90’s.  He became very involved with the community and was well known throughout the City of Socorro; he along with former Police Chief Luis Vega spent countless hours in the community encouraging students to stay in school and away from drugs; they played an active role in gang prevention in the community by volunteering on Saturday mornings to wipe out graffiti.  Their efforts reduced gang activity in our schools and increased school attendance.  In 1991 the school district embraced the concept of having a police department and finally established in 2001. Mr. Carrasco was the districts first officially sworn peace officer. In fact his badge number is #1.  Shortly after the department was established as an official police agency; Mr. Carrasco excelled as an officer and was quickly promoted to the position of Sergeant.  The department only had four police officers for approximately twenty campuses.  Throughout his time serving the district Sgt. Carrasco witnessed the district grow to where it is today at over 50,000 students, approaching 49 campuses and over 100 employees that serve as Police and Security officers today. Sgt. Carrasco is dearly missed; his almost thirty years of service and dedication to our school districts success will never be forgotten any time soon.  His legacy continues to provide a difference to our community of students and colleagues across the district. His influence and dedication to the Team SISD family was instilled in his children who are proud products of Socorro ISD. In fact, his devotion to SISD was key in their aspirations to follow down the same path in public service. His daughter Erika is a 4th grade teacher at Lujan Chavez Elementary School and his two sons, Jose Jr. and Steven, followed in their fathers’ footsteps. Jose, who also worked as a security officer for SISD, is now a New Mexico State Police Officer and  Steven is currently a patrol officer for SISD Police Department. You will receive many nominations in the naming of Elementary School #49 but there is no one more deserving of this honor than Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco. His commitment and dedication to the district is unmatched. Wearing peace officer badge #1 and being Socorro ISD first Police Sergeant should also be your #1 consideration to receive this prestigious honor. Please consider the name Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary School. Thank you for your time, commitment and consideration!
