Sobeys: Donate expired food to community agencies.

*Let's feed people not composters!

I recently spoke to the manager at my local Sobey's in Waterloo (Bridgeport Rd.) as to why they no longer have 50% off stickers on their produce. I was informed that they have stopped this practice because head office has told them too.

Placing produce on quick sale for 50% off is extremely valuable for those who can not afford full priced food and shop on a budget such as the working poor.

I also asked what they did with the meat and other produce that was on it's way out and was told that they repurpose it in other ways (turn it into meat loaf or bread crumbs). However, a good deal of produce does go to compost.

I find it appalling that food still fit for human consumption is being used in any other way. The date on foods is a sell by date and is still usable for consumption. It is unconscionable that food usable for human consumption be used for any other purpose, especially simply discarding it!

I work at a local community kitchen and the effect that good quality cuts of meat would do for our citizen's struggling economically would be huge.

Let's ask Sobey's to be generous!

Letter to

It is my understanding that when food has reached its best before date your practice is to repurpose it or compost it.

I would urge you to reconsider this practice. Up until recently products reaching their best before date were put on 50% off fast buy sales. This is extremely valuable for those who can not afford full priced food and shop on a budget such as the working poor. I urge you to return to this practice.

Beyond this I plead you to donate expired food's to community agencies. The date on foods is a sell by date and is still usable for consumption. It is unconscionable that food usable for human consumption be used for any other purpose, especially simply discarding it!
