1. We - students, young people, academics and technical experts from Universities across South Africa, including Wits University - hereby submit this Petition against the Director of SOAS University of London, Professor Adam Habib for his insensitive, despicable and revoltingly intolerable racist remarks during a meeting held between him and the SOAS Students Union on 11 March 2021, which has since received global backlash, outcry and outrage from students worldwide, most particularly from South Africa.

2. We note the contents of the lengthy video containing Prof Habib's vulgar, repulsive and aggressive remarks that have gone viral on social media platforms, we also note the arrogant and dismissive response issued by Adam Habib outlining his condescending and belligerent apology on a mere Twitter thread on 12 March 2021.

3. We are of the position that Adam Habib’s remarks were verbally violent, aggressive and distasteful. His tone while addressing the students was further received as overwhelming, frightening, bellicose and threatening.

4. The SOAS Student Union members that were part of the meeting were viciously subjected  to undeserved aggression and a blatant attack from the racist, ignorant and manipulative remarks expressed by Adam Habib. Habib’s remarks to the respondents were notably intimidating and detestable.

5. The behaviour by Adam Habib is one that has proven to be hurtful to the African resonance discourse, and a figure of his calibre should not be granted any further opportunities to contribute to the development nor delivery of education-centered materials addressing African studies, neither in the present nor in the nearest future. Prof Habib has voluntarily displayed that he lacks the intellectual capacity and emotional intelligence to reason and excogitate on matters related to race, identity, history and present lived experiences of Africans in South Africa, the continent and diaspora at large.

6. We, students, young people, academics and technical experts at academic institutions in South Africa (as per signatures contained herein), stand in solidarity with the SOAS Student Union and SOAS Black Students Body in calling for Prof Adam Habib's removal, resignation and/or dismissal within the next 31 days and call for SOAS University of London to hold Adam Habib accountable, by duly relieving him from his duties as Director of SOAS. We trust that SOAS will send a clear message of a zero-tolerance position to racism and the protection of students from aggressive and ill-behaved staff members of SOAS.

7. We call on the Board of Trustees of the SOAS University of London to engage in decisive deliberations on this matter, and acknowledge the gravity of the expressions and remarks exuded by Prof Adam Habib, and; collectively reflect a favourable response that would re-instate a positive image of the University by Africans, particularly from South Africa. We are hopeful that the Chairperson (Ms Marie Staunton) and Vice Chairperson (Sir Martin Harris) of the SOAS Board, will consult further with members of the Board and SOAS Student Union to reach an amicable resolve to this matter and satisfy the demands of the SOAS Students Union and all affected students by the hospitalising and utterly unforgiveable remarks issued by Prof Adam Habib.

8. Should a satisfactory response not be achieved through the SOAS leadership and the SOAS Board on the successful removal of Professor Habib; select students contained in the signatures of this petition, will consider pursuing strategic litigation against Prof Adam Habib and SOAS University of London, in order to achieve an independent and sought-after favourable resolve to this matter.

9. We reiterate our position of standing in rage and solidarity with the SOAS Student Union and equally call for Prof Adam Habib's removal, resignation and/or dismissal within the next 31 days.

10. We further seek a confirmation of retrieval of this Petition and commitment to provide a detailed response; once a decision is made regarding the actions of Prof Adam Habib by SOAS leadership, within 7 (seven) days of retrieval of this dated Petition.
