SCMS (Snow Canyon Middle School) has been known to have a dress code that specifically targets girls. The dress code policy calls for no showing the midriff, no shorts below the thumb, no ripped jeans with holes below the thumb, no showing undergarments, and no tank tops. This school is located in a dessert where the temperatures can high to almost 120 degrees fahrenheit. The P.E. dress code calls for no cropped tops, no booty shorts or shorts below the thigh, no tank tops, for girls. Boys are allowed to wear tank tops or even go shirtless. The dress code has also shown signs of homophobia with an example of a boy being dress coded for wearing fishnets because “boys can’t wear fishnets.” The middle school girls range from 13-15, or 8th and 9th graders. The majority of the teachers dress coding are 30+ years old. The main reason or excuse for dress code that everyone is familiar with is that “it distracts the boys from learning.” While the boys are learning and the teacher is pulling the female student out of class to learn, for being distracting. An email was sent to a female student who attended this school who had gotten dress coded repeatedly over the school year about the dress code. She was the only girl in the school to have received said email. The bathrooms at SCMS all have pad and tampon dispensers that are never filled, and that you have to pay to use. This is wrong for many reasons, the main being that those with periods can not control them, and shouldn’t have to pay so they do not bleed everywhere. Help make girls and others feel more comfortable at SCMS.
