The Period Project at SMU by Marie Joung started this petition to SMU Administration

The idea of providing free menstrual products may sound absurd. The common reaction seems to be: “Why do women need access to free products? They've been supplying their own all this time, why can’t they keep buying them?”

We've been taught to see menstruation as an unclean, personal matter rather than a natural and healthy part of life.

For half the human population (not just women, but also trans and gender nonbinary individuals) menstruation is unavoidable—and therefore menstrual products are necessary, much like toilet paper. After all, the urge to use the bathroom is natural, unavoidable, and healthy, and students deserve the ability to accommodate these needs.

If you understand this argument, you can also understand the expectation that bathrooms be stocked with pads and tampons as well. Students – in fact, half the student body – need supplies to accommodate their very normal and unavoidable menstrual periods.

The Period Project is a student initiative to provide free pads and tampons through the installation and upkeep of wall dispensers in women’s bathrooms in the academic and public buildings on the campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU).

By signing your name to this petition, you are standing in support of an equal health and education experience for all students at SMU. Thank you!
