America just saw one million new COVID cases in a day. Johnson County itself has seen the most daily cases in the last few weeks than we have seen throughout the course of the entire pandemic. Zeke Greenwald, a senior at Shawnee Mission West states “there is no reason to put our student body at risk if we don’t have to. If not for yourself, do it for the at-risk staff and students around you.” in regards to wearing a mask. Those who have signed this petition agree with Greenwald and firmly believe that a mask requirement for the spring semester throughout SMSD would assist in ensuring staff and student safety amidst the new peaks in COVID cases.
