On February 7, 2020, South Loop Elementary School (SLES) Administration announced a new irrational and illogical food policy that is harmful to students health in a guise of protecting students from marijuana.  This "effective immediately" policy takes extreme action that is unacceptable. Prepackaged food is less healthy and more expensive than packaged food. This policy needs to be retracted immediately.

SLES is K-8th grade. Many students bring food and snacks from home everyday in bags or boxes packaged at home. Students and parents need to continue to be able to bring food that fits their health and budget preferences.

TEXT FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT https://southloopschool.org/reminders/important-reminders/changes-to-snack-and-lunch-policy/

As we, and the entire state, become accustomed to the new law legalizing marijuana, we have decided it is important to reevaluate our current food policy to ensure the safety of all our students. With that being said, we have decided that any snack items for lunch and snack time must be store bought and in single serve packaging. If a student brings non prepackaged items to school, they will not be able to eat it during lunch or snack time. We will not throw the food items out, however, the item will be confiscated and given back to the student to take home at the end of the day. This policy will eliminate the risk of any students accidentally bringing in cannabis infused food items to school. We also want to remind you that sharing food is not allowed. This change is effective immediately.
