Why this petition matters

During this disastrous pandemic situation of COVID-19, we the final year students (UG & PG courses) of VSSUT, Burla have been notified to be prepared for physical classroom teaching at the institution (w.e.f 11/01/2021) and offline examinations after completion of the course. While the vaccines are yet to be available to everyone, we highly doubt the efficiency of the vaccines! However that's just another issue, but there's something else to focus on, the sanitary conditions of the hostels are really poor even as per the government standards, with a dearth of water supply at times and poor hygienic conditions of the mess meals in the boys hostels. Particularly, the Pulaha Hall of Residence, which was converted yesteryear to "Covid Care Centre, Sambalpur" hasn't been sanitised properly as of yet and that makes it uninhabitable for the students. Also, most of the students from Pulaha Hall have shifted their luggages from the hostel already and are unwilling to shift back to the hostel. Furthermore, the sudden committee meetings of the college authorities hasn't considered the parents concern whether they want to send their children back to the hostels in these kind of uninhabitable conditions! We also have been notified to pay an amount of ₹6300 as hostel fees which seems unreasonable as the students are unwilling to reside in the hostels due to lack of sanitisation and water supply during this Covid outbreak and also the mess dues (balance) which the hostel authorities owe us, has not been returned as of yet since the students left the hostel yesteryear (March 2019) after the immediate outbreak of COVID-19. The final year students also have their GATE exam from February's first week onwards, which needs serious preparation, however we're getting no study leave this year due to the tight schedule of the academic calendar. In such cases, we highly demand only online classes and online examinations for us to complete our final year of UG/PG courses without any further delay. If not, we want the Government to take full responsibility of anything that happens to any of us and bear the costs, if unfortunately, any of us gets infected and in turn gets hospitalised! We all know, that its almost impossible to reduce the chances of spreading this virus to 0% even with the rigorous maintenance of the safety protocols due to differences in our immune systems. Different people, different immunity powers! So, we the students of VSSUT Burla, urge the Government of Odisha to consider the situation and direct our institution to conduct online classes and online examinations for the final year UG/PG courses as soon as possible.
