Senate Joint Resolution # 13

Relative to the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe

Dear California Senators and Assembly Members

We are writing you to urge you to support and help pass SJR 13.

This resolution supports California’s Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the SF Bay Region in their 40-year-old struggle to clarify their status as a federally recognized tribe.

The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe has a documented history of over 230 years, from their aboriginal villages (before first contact with the Spanish) all the way to present day.  The Tribe has deep relations and community ties with Bay Area Universities, City and State Agencies, environmental/conservation groups, local and National groups and associations, bay area museums, high schools, and communities.

This resolution does not have the power to restore the tribe’s government-to-government relationship with the United States.

It does however have the power to heal the wounds caused by the State of California’s genocidal policies against Native Americans by supporting the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe in their efforts to restore their status. Governor Newson recently apologized for California’s shameful treatment of our first peoples, and this resolution continues that acknowledgment that California owes its first inhabitants its unwavering support.

Please join us now in support this important resolution.
