Kelli Ruth started this petition to Simpson College Students and

On Sept. 9, a protest was held on Simpson College’s campus. Vice President of the the Student Body, Jorge Castelán, chose not to attend the protest for two reasons, that he later outlined in a video on Twitter: (1) he is a low-income, first generation immigrant, who needed to go to work that day to provide for himself and pay his way through college, and (2) he thought attending the protest was too great of a risk to his health, as he is trying to work in a medical facility where he will he exposed to immunocompromised people, and is worried about spreading COVID-19. A handful of students present at the protest were upset by Jorge’s lack of attendance, and instead of waiting for his explanation, they immediately chose to begin his impeachment process. The impeachment process involves the Executive Committee (E.C.) of the Student Government Association (S.G.A.). The E.C. is comprised of the Class Presidents. Currently, the Senior Class President is Casey Spring; Junior Class is Tatum Clayburn; and Sophomore Class President is Chase Henry. Casey and Tatum were two of the people organizing for Jorge’s impeachment initially. Their group harassed Jorge on social media, and harassed other Simpson students to support them. As it stands, two-thirds of the people who get to decide Jorge’s fate, were stacked against him from the beginning, and have even acted unethically/ unprofessionally. Signing this petition means you oppose the impeachment of Jorge and/or they way it is being done. This petition calls upon the S.G.A. to either dismiss the impeachment proceedings, or to conduct them in a more democratic and representative way, involving the entire student body. Signing this petition means you support your Vice President, Jorge Castelán.
