Workers at SimpliSafe have engaged in a series of protest actions, including petitions and posted notices, leading to a recent total work stoppage which the company unsuccessfully tried to obstruct by having a worker arrested and brutally dragged from the office.
These actions are necessary to expose how the company has repeatedly failed to address a major bedbug infestation in the office. For months workers were exposed to the dual hazards of bedbugs and toxic pesticides without their knowledge. Statements posted in company break rooms highlighted how the company had lied to workers about why they were spraying toxic chemicals in the office, how they had tried to intimidate workers they suspected of contracting the bedbugs, and how the company had systematically and categorically denied there were any bedbugs in the office at all. After the pest control measures made some workers sick, their complaints were met with cheerful denials and statements designed to avoid responsibility.
There are now more serious factors at play, such as SimpliSafe calling the police to remove workers, suspending workers in retaliation for participating in the work stoppage, and numerous supervisors intimidating reps who are speaking out. SimpliSafe management has also removed the petition from the break room and supervisors have snatched flyers and other materials out of workers hands. SimpliSafe is clearly engaging in retaliation against protected concerted activity, which is illegal, and failing to adequately address a degrading and unsanitary work environment. In response to the work stoppage, SimpliSafe has gone so far as to post supervisors at the entrances and exits of the office to keep track of workers' movements in the office, and hired security guards to monitor the workplace.
We demand that SimpliSafe:
- Immediately reinstate suspended and fired workers, with back pay
- Publicly apologize for mishandling the situation
- Properly address bedbug situation with full transparency going forward
- Immediately halt all interrogations and apologize to those interrogated
- Publicly announce that workers are allowed to discuss what has happened
- Fully compensate all workers dealing with bedbug infestations
As United SimpliSafe Workers we deserve to be listened to and treated with respect. The company makes huge profits off of our labor, and our hard work is the foundation on which the company has grown. They can't afford to ignore us!
