Reinstate the HSE funding for Baby Friendly Health Initiative in Irish Hospitals

Removal of funding to promote breastfeeding in Irish hospitals is short sighted and needs to be reversed. It is hypocritical for the government to state that they wish for the exceptionally low rates of breastfeeding in Ireland to be increased and at the same time cut all funding to promote breastfeeding.
According to the World Health Organisation, children who were breastfed as babies are less likely to be overweight or obese, perform better on intelligence tests and have higher school attendance. It is also "associated with higher income in adult life" Can the government not see that a small investment in promoting breastfeeding will have significant long term benefits, including less of a strain on the health system.
From my own personal experience my first breastfeeding was cut short as I did not have the education or support from out health system. Knowledge is power and to increase the rates we need to increase awareness of the benefits of feeding and also how do it and where to go if it gets difficult.
