As it stands breast feeding mothers are only protected by legislation to pump or nurse in the workplace for the first six months of their infants life, this is ridiculous as currently maternity leave is for 26 weeks, which means most mothers return to work after their protection from this legislation runs out. As W.H.O, The World Health Organisation and the HSE recommend feeding our babies until they are two years old and beyond, we would like this timeframe extended to accomadate this. In the civil service in Ireland it is already two years a mother can breast feed or pump in the workplace, well done to that sector, but this needs to be rolled out across all work place sectors in Ireland. The HSE states 'Your breastmilk is all your baby needs for the first 6 months. Your breastmilk continues to provide an important part of your baby's diet as he or she grows. From 6 months you can start your baby on solid foods and continue to breastfeed to 2 years or older. Breastfeeding is soothing and comforting for your baby and creates a special closeness'.
