The cancellation of IS 451, a REQUIRED class, for the summer 2020 semester has significant negative consequences for students who were enrolled in this class and can no longer take it, and moreover will impact students who were planning on taking it in the upcoming fall and spring semesters.

This is a class that IS students take at the end of their degree, and as such the majority of us already have internships, post-graduate degrees, and other opportunities planned for the upcoming year. The cancellation of IS 451 for the summer will jeopardize every student's academic career and compromise our abilities to graduate as intended.

This is a mandatory course, and as such, there is no possible alternative for students to take. Additionally, given that this decision was only announced today (April, 2nd, 2020), even if students attempt to alter their schedules, every IS upper division class is full.

Furthermore, this cancellation puts students under significant economic strain, whether it be living situations or the need to take an extra semester simply in order to complete this class. It is not fair to have students penalized for the lack of proper planning ahead from the department.

If the issue is that SFU cannot find a replacement professor, we are formally requesting that they find a replacement.

Please sign this petition to get IS 451 reinstated. The decision to cancel this class significantly impacts every International Studies student, whether they were enrolled in IS 451 this summer or were planning on taking it in a future semester.

Additionally, I am requesting that all IS students email Bridget Barker (intst@sfu.ca), Ellen Siew Meng Yap (ismgr@sfu.ca) and Aleks Besan (profdev@sfu.ca) and formally request that SFU find a solution so that this class can run this summer.
