Hate speech targeting a protected category of people (in this case, trans folks) violates the Canadian Criminal Code. By allowing this "gender identity" event, SFU is complicit in violating the Canadian Criminal Code. SFU has a legal responsibility to protect its marginalized communities.

Simply put, because trans rights are human rights. Trans rights are women’s rights. Trans rights are children’s rights.

Gender identity is fluid. Maybe I'll start up a debate on how we should treat cis people who dont respect gender identity.

As a former on-campus employee, I am truly dismayed to see this kind of event hosted under the auspices of the university. Please prioritize your trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming staff and students.

Thanks for adding your voice.

I expect more from my alma mater. Every time that educational institutions devote resources and space to these kinds of measurably bigoted and harmful discussions, students lose out. I assume SFU wouldn’t host a speaker who wanted to discuss their belief that the Earth is flat, so why this?
