Stop the Cruise Liners Polluting Southampton's Air.

Air pollution causes 40,000 early deaths each year in the UK. On average every person loses between 1 and 2 years of life due to air pollution. And the docks at Southampton aren’t helping. The docks contribute to 20-25% of Southampton overall air pollution. Here are some frightening statistics
- 110 people die prematurely in Southampton every year from air pollution.
- This is the highest percentage in the South-East of England
- ·In 2014, Southampton was in the top 10 for the worst air polluted city in the UK
This can be reduced if ships are offered a plug in station when they dock. Other countries like America already offer this service. At the moment ships that dock have their engines running. They run their engines so they can keep electricity running. This is affecting air quality around Southampton including areas near to our school. For example we monitored the air at at Rushington Roundabout and the first data shows that the level of nitrogen dioxide was 71.7 µg/m3 which was almost double the European Union legal mean annual limit for nitrogen dioxide which is 40 µg/m3.
Please sign our petition which we will send to the Associated British Ports who are in charge of Southampton docks and to our MP, Dr Julian Lewis to persuade them for the need for plug in facilities for the ships that dock at Southampton Docks.
