Sikhism, a religion that is based on equality in gender, race, caste and color defined by our Gurus but yet in 2019, we find that baptized Sikh women are still not allowed to perform seva whether its in the form of Kirtan (Singing Hymns) or washing the prakash-asthan area at Shri Harmandir Sahib. We are talking about the very root principles of Sikhi- Sewa and Simran that are not gender specific however have been made so based on the patriarchal norms practiced by the SGPC.

Kirtan from the Darbar Sahib is televised world wide- this is a global issue and is an issue for Sikh women all around the world including here in the UK. So why is it that the only Gurdwara where this rule is applied, is at the most important pilgrimage site for Sikhism? When looking at the history of woman's place in Sikhi, we have great examples to live by. Whether its Mai Bhago -a renowned Sikh Warrior and the Bodyguard of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Mata Khivi- The first to serve Langar, Rani Sada Kaur- The First Woman Commander-in-Chief and the list goes on. It is stated no where in our scriptures that women are not allowed to perform Sewa and/or Simran at the Darbar Sahib but in-fact is encouraged.

So in honour of 550 years of Dhan Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his true message, lets come together and help change things for Sikh women and their rightful place at Shri Harmandir Sahib. Its time to set an example, just how many great Sikh female figures did before us for the generations to come.
