Sign To End Death Sentences in Iran
In the first days of 2017 the world has continued to witness a ruthless violation of right to life for Iranian citizens. Nineteen public executions have been recorded in the first five days of January alone. Of course, the actual execution statistics in Iran are significantly higher than anything made public.
The religious dictatorship ruling Iran uses executions in the most barbaric methods, such as public hangings and stoning alongside other cruel measures, including amputating hands and feet, or even gouging out eyes, to create a climate of fear and terror across the Iranian society, and utterly quell all voices of dissent.
The United Nations General Assembly in December 2016 condemned the Iranian regime for the 63rd time for its gross human rights violations. According to U.N. reports, executions in Iran have risen significantly during the past few years. More than 2,700 people have been sent to the gallows in Iran during Hassan Rouhani’s tenure, and the Iranian regime is the world’s leading record holder in executions per capita. Amnesty International has expressed its abhorrence of the execution of minors in Iran.
“We have a village in Sistan and Baluchistan Province (southeast Iran bordering Pakistan) in which all men have been executed,” Iran’s vice president said publicly back in early 2016.
The most shocking of all was the publication of a 1988 sound file belonging to the late Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, then serving as successor to Iranian regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini. A widespread, country-wide and summary massacre was discussed in the sound file, even against prisoners whose terms had finalized. Over 30,000 political prisoners, most affiliated to the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), were executed in Iran back in the summer of 1988.
This sound bite reveals how Mostafa Pour Mohammadi, now the justice minister of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s cabinet, was amongst the “Death Commission” mullahs behind the hideous massacre. This sound file clearly indicates that pregnant women and teenage girls as young as 15 and 16 were also executed.
Resorting to a wave of executions under any excuse-- either a so-called divine ruling of God, or the law and sharia approved by the dictatorial Iranian regime’s parliament - is nothing but legitimizing further crackdown. We strongly condemn these measures, and the perpetrators of such crimes should never enjoy any immunity. They must be placed before justice.
We strongly condemn any and all neglect by world powers regarding flagrant human rights violations and increasing executions in Iran under the pretext of sealing a nuclear agreement.
We demand the following measures:
1. Immediate practical and serious global measures, especially by European Union member states, the U.S. and U.N. Security Council members to stop all arbitrary executions in Iran
2. The Iranian regime must be compelled to cancel all death sentences. Reports indicate hundreds of men and women in Iran are currently on death row. This waiting period is significantly harsher and more torturous than actually being executed.
3. Stoning, being a symbol of the most atrocious punishments, must be acknowledged as crime against humanity, and its practice brought to an end in Iran.
