If you or anyone you know rides a motorcycle, I implore you to sign this petition which will ensure a safer riding experience for all motorcyclists.

  • I am petitioning for the UK government to make these changes to the motorcycle licensing laws within the country. 
  1. For the CBT to be removed as it does not provide riders with adequate training/testing nor a machine capable of appropriate performance.
  2. The AM+A1 licenses to be removed, instead the A2 license should replace this, with minor changes. The portion of the CBT regarding basic training should be incorporated into the A2 license before the test, after completion allowing a rider who passes the A2 test to ride within the current A2 license restrictions, however from aged 16 onwards.
  3. The A license should be available from age 18 (the A2 must be taken before the A license regardless of age) allowing riders who pass this test to ride a motorcycle of any power.

This essentially simplifies the license restrictions for motorcycles in the UK and provides motorcyclists with a machine capable of performance such that they can safely overtake, maintain motorway speeds, accelerate out of lights efficiently and brake adequately. Higher CC/power motorcycles have greater rider aids, better brakes, suspension, tires, power delivery, thus making them far safer. Motorcyclists are being forcefully restricted to a low power machine, purely based on their age and not their skill-set (the only factor that is actually important regarding the power of machine a motorcyclist should be entitled to ride).

Car drivers, who can do substantially more damage to other citizens and their property have no such license restrictions. Aged 17, once the driving test is passed, a super car can be purchased assuming said person has the finances to fund this, therefore it is absolutely absurd to limit motorcyclists (who will generally only harm themselves in the event of a crash) with licensing restrictions. The government should not dictate what people wish to do, so long as this does not impact others negatively, in accordance with there being no power output license restrictions on cars it is perfectly reasonable to expect, at least similar treatment for motorcycles.

The current system employed by the UK government, supposedly enforced in order to keep young vulnerable motorcyclists away from high powered machines, is instead just a ploy in order to exploit motorcyclists for monetary gain. I say this, due to current legislation forcing a motorcyclist who begins riding aged 17 to do a total of four examinations/tests - each costing hundreds of pounds (The CBT, A1, A2 and A license). In order to ride any power of motorcycle; they cannot access this until 21 (at the minimum - 24 in most cases).

When looking at the data it is clear the current licensing restrictions are extremely harmful to motorcyclists.

58% of all accident claims occur on 50-125cc motorcycles. This is a truly unnerving statistic, especially when you consider this category of motorcycle only makes up 27.5% of motorcycles on UK roads. 

Alongside this, amongst 16-24-year olds (2013) nearly 64% of casualties were while riding a motorcycle of up to 125cc, amongst 16-20-year olds it is 75%. This is despite higher powered motorcycles being available from 19 onwards. This clearly shows a link between lower powered motorcycles (1-125cc) and substantially increased accident rate, riders of this class are disproportionately more likely to be involved in an accident, which cannot be solely attributed to age or lack of experience.
