Jada C started this petition to Mayor Lori Lightfoot

Systemic racism in the environment has been an issue for a long time. Racism is not only in the environment as it is a power complex. Often the people in power are the people who have the most money.  Although these people only make up a small amount, they have the most control. For example, if they get to choose where a new factory is going to be built, they would not want it near where they live.  It is the “not in my backyard” phenomenon.

An example of this behavior is when there was a meeting with the Bridgeport community to discuss the Cougle Foods meat packaging plant being built right by the river. The residents explained why they do not want the meat packing plant there, and a good alderman would listen to his community. However, that meeting was not productive because the building of this plant in that location was already decided beforehand. The purpose of that meeting was never to listen to the community but rather to make it look like they were listening. There are so many more examples like this, for instance, the cement mixing plant on Loomis St. bridge. Why would there even be a cement mixing plant in the city’s residential area? Adding more industrialization to the area, makes it less safe for the people living there and the environment. No matter what your socioeconomic status or race is, everyone’s voice should be heard equally and everyone should have an equal opportunity to voice their opinion.
