On December 14, 2012, a random act of violence was committed against innocent children and adults in the town of Newtown, CT. 20 schoolchildren and 6 adults were killed for no reason.
Several hours after this tragedy occurred, I passed a homeless man on the street. I couldn't help but think about how we value lives once they're gone, yet we pass people on the street each day, who are barely surviving. Due to my state of mind and the sadness I was feeling about our world, I gave this man a few dollars. The man said thank you in a truly grateful way that made me realize that I had made his life slightly better in that moment. In turn, I felt slightly better, despite my overwhelming sadness. I watched from my car as this man then went into the grocery store that was a few feet from where he was standing. I felt a sense of happiness, knowing that this man was going to get himself something to eat.
This brief experience made me realize that "random acts of kindness" are one of the best ways to honor the victims of this tragedy. Random acts of kindness will also help us to heal in the process too.
Please sign this petition if you will commit a random act of kindness to honor the victims of Newtown, CT. Your random act of kindness can be anything, large or small, to help someone. It can be a donation to a soup kitchen, a hug for someone who needs it, a phone call to a loved one who may be lonely, or anythng that you can think to do that will make someone's world a little brighter.
We can all debate larger issues such as gun laws and we can all have our opinions, but one thing we can't debate is the following: Committing a random act of kindness for others will make someone else's world a little bit better and it's something you can do today, to make an immediate, positive difference in the world.
