Support Northern Beaches Council in protecting Pittwater waterway against over development

We need your help - residents of the Northern Beaches and all users and lovers of Pittwater, please show your support for Northern Beaches Council by signing this petition.

The Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay (RMYC) is currently fighting the Northern Beaches Council in the Land and Environment Court in an attempt to extend their already large marina, a further 13,300m2 into our beautiful Pittwater waterway. This club has already commandeered enough of our beautiful public waterway for their own private use.

On behalf of all the residents of the Northern Beaches and all users and lovers of Pittwater, we congratulate Northern Beaches Council on fighting against this proposed development that would steal even more of our Pittwater.  A win by the RMYC and their rich boat owners would set a terrible precedent for the rest of Pittwater and even other waterways around Sydney.

The RMYC was asked by the former Pittwater Council to withdraw their Development Application on the grounds that they could not prove that they had any existing rights to use this area.  The RMYC refused!  Not only did they refuse, they decided to by-pass the Joint Regional Planning Panel and normal protocol.  Instead they decided to fight the Northern Beaches Council in the Land and Environment Court.  Costing all Northern Beaches ratepayers thousands of dollars in legal fees in the defense of the public interest.

Council’s planners and legal team have to date done a wonderful job.  The Land and Environment Court mediation hearing is set down in the Land and Environment Court for 17 November.  The most important legal item is existing use rights based upon current commercial swing moorings.  If the RMYC was to win, public waterways would be rezoned and used by RMYC for their marina. We hope that the council is successful in defeating this application and gives nothing away at the mediation.

This is not just about the RMYC it is about all of Pittwater:  the Roads & Maritime Service (RMS) has advised that there are currently a total of 969 Commercial swing moorings in Pittwater – if RMYC where to win, think what a terrible precedent this would set for our public waterway. And what our beautiful Pittwater could look like.  A parking lot for mega rich boat owners! Many of these boats are never used.

Council – please keep up the good work and preserve our wonderful Pittwater waterway for all of the public.
