During a political debate, voters need to hear what each candidate has to say. When one candidate talks over another, they are not abiding by the agreed-upon guidelines. The interruption makes it impossible for the audience to hear and distracts the candidate who is speaking during his/her allotted time.

Those voters who are undecided at the time of the debate are at a disadvantage if they cannot hear the full responses of each candidate.

The Commission on Presidential Debates needs to set up the debate in such a way as to allow candidates' microphones to be turned on or unmuted only during a candidate's allotted time and turned off or muted when their time is up. This is an easy task for the sound technician to do and a simple modification to the debate format.
