Give kids in Daylesford a new skate and bike park

A central issue for the youth of Daylesford is accessibility to parks and recreational facilities.  Daylesford is 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne and a 30-40 minute drive from major towns like Ballarat, Castlemaine, Kyneton,Woodend and Ballan.  Given Daylesford has no rail infrastructure and limited bus services, young people can only access what is available in town.

Daylesford only has one park that is walking distance from town on which sits the existing Daylesford Skatepark that was built in the 1990’s.   Although the skatepark has been the main, and much appreciated, place for young people to play over the past 20 years, it has reached a point where use is declining due to its dilapidated state and lack of options to challenge and develop riders of all ages and abilities.

After initial consultation with local riders, we have put together a design concept for what we would like the skate/bike park to look like.   It involves:

1.    Enhance the existing skatepark to:

  • reduce current safety issues surrounding old steel ramps that are hazardous when wet and rusted and worn since being installed 20 years ago;
  • address the lack of options for riders of all levels to progress and challenge their abilities.

2.   Implement a new bike park on vacant land adjoining the existing skatepark to further utilise surrounding spaces to encourage outdoor recreational activities for young people to engage in.

We invite everyone in the community to support this initiative by voting for it on this petition which will then be used to secure funding.

 Thank you.
