We are a group of parents concerned by the presence of a cell phone tower next to the Downtown Doral Charter Upper School (DDCUS) in Doral, Florida.

The proximity to the school, together with the readings made with several radiofrecuency meters (above 1000 mW/m2) forced us to create this petition to ask Ms Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg (the Head of School) to take these concerns seriously, and work with the school district, the City of Doral, and the parents to ask the company owning of the tower (Crown Castle), to SHUT DOWN the signal until there’s REAL PROOF of safety, rather than the old and outdated limits the FCC is using since 1997.
The readings taken around the school show peaks that are 10 to 40 times higher than the limits allowed in several countries.  

We are really concerned about the emerging risks associated with wireless antennas installed near school buildings across the country.

These antennas emit high levels of radio-frequency (RF) microwave radiation (“wireless radiation”) to which students, teachers and staff are exposed throughout the school day.

Over the past several decades, independent researchers have published thousands of peer- reviewed scientific studies documenting serious adverse health impacts from exposure to wireless radiation, ranging from neurological and behavioral problems to cancer. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), children absorb up to 10 times more wireless radiation in the bone marrow of the skull compared to adults due to their thinner skulls and higher brain conductivity.

Teachers and staff who are pregnant, or may become pregnant, are also at high risk from wireless radiation exposure. In a 2012 study, researchers at Yale University found that the offspring of exposed lab animals had abnormal brain development and exhibited all the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Wireless companies claim their antennas and other wireless equipment meet all Federal Communications Commission (FCC) exposure guidelines, and that may be true, but the guidelines themselves are almost 25 years out of date, and are not designed to protect children. In 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) complained to the FCC that its exposure limits do not account for the unique physiological vulnerabilities of children, nor do they reflect current use patterns of wireless devices.

The lack of federal guidance on protecting children and the public from exposures to wireless radiation leaves school boards and administrators with the responsibility to do whatever possible to ensure that our children, teachers and staff are safe in this increasingly wireless world. For that, we urge you to vigorously support our effort to shut down make the cell phone tower next to the Upper School shutting it down until the FCC updates the safety guidelines and we know everyone is safe.
