Allow the Shrewsbury Dana footpath to be made accessible for all

Castlefields Action Team started this petition to Shropshire Horticultural Society

The Dana is a well-used, historic, pedestrian thoroughfare leading from areas of North Shrewsbury to the town centre. However, at Castle Gates there are 19 steps that make the path difficult or impossible for many people, such as those with mobility difficulties or using buggies and prams. It has long been proposed by Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Town Council and very many residents that an improved and accessible route be made through the castle forecourt grounds, but Shropshire Horticultural Society, who own the forecourt, have refused to allow this.

The Councils’ plans (supported by English Heritage) are for a landscaped level footpath that would bypass the steps while giving a pleasant approach to the town alongside the castle gardens with excellent views of the Grade 1 listed Library and its grounds.

This is the only affordable and practical scheme and Shropshire Horticultural Society should now allow the Councils’ proposals to go ahead.
