The Government of Assam, India has recently made study of one of the three languages as optional compulsory subject in the schools of Assam. The languages are Assamese, Bengali and Bodo.
There is no provision or option to let students learn Hindi as a compulsory subject till class 10 in Assam.
Many tribal students living in Dima Hasao district of Assam have been taking Hindi as one of the subject till Class 10 as they are more adept at learning Hindi as their lingua franca, Haflong Hindi is a closer to Hindi.
The various tribes of Dima Hasao district (erstwhile N C Hills district), which enjoys the protection of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution for preserving their language and culture, want that they should have the option to learn their mother tongue language in future as and when the books are developed till class 10. They also want to continue with the option of studying Hindi as a language subject till class 10.
If only Assamese/Bengali/Bodo language is imposed as a language subject for the students in Dima Hasao district of Assam, there will be a massive drop of matriculation pass percentage, which will destroy the career and future of thousands of youths.
Therefore, we humbly request Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam to exempt the students of Dima Hasao district from the said rule and allow them to take Hindi as a language subject and also keep provision for introducing other tribal languages as and when they develop their books.
