After the death of the veteran environmental expert-activist Shri G.D. Agarwal on 111th day of his fast in Rishikesh, a young computer science graduate activist of age 26 years, Shri Atmabodhanand has been on fast in Matri Sadan Ashram, Haridwar, for clean Ganga and today is the 127th day of his fast without break.

On Saturday 23 February 2019, a protest march was organised in Delhi in support of the demands highlighting the official indifference and shunning of any dialogue even with activists who have put their very lives at stake. This news needs to be widely circulated for bringing the fast to a successful conclusion, and preventing the loss of another life for the cause of clean Ganga.

After writing an open letter to the Prime Minister of India on 13 June 2018, Shri G.D. Agarwal, the ex-Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Professor, and world renowned environmental activist, began his last fast on 22 June 2018 and gave the ultimate sacrifice by offering his life for a cause that was most important for him. In 2011, Shri G.D. Agarwal became a Sanyasi, and was known as Swamy Gyan Swaroop Sanad, as per the traditional Hindu practice of living the last phase of life, and he lived and died for the sake of preserving the holiest river of India, the Ganga.

The demand of allowing free flow of Ganga by not allowing construction of any new dams and the disbanding of dams under construction is not new. But so far all efforts for it has been in vain. Given the urgency of the matter as the fast has entered the 124th day, we undersigned would like to request the Minister for the Ministry for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, to immediately start negotiations with Shri Atmabodhanand so that the fast is brought to an end and the goal of clean Ganga makes a headway.
