Why this petition matters

Every student in Ontario that is in the core French program is obliged to learn French from the grades of 4-8 in elementary school as well as earn a French credit in high school. Most students will drop French as a subject after grade 9 and proceed to forget it. Many more students would much rather learn something different in their time at school. Others think French is a skill that can only be applied to a small amount of careers. These are all reasons for why French should become an optional subject.

By making French optional, students who still wish to learn the language can, while those who would rather partake in something other could do that instead. The students learning French would not be effected by the new change.

If French were to become optional, students and schools would have more time to do what they wanted. They could specialize. Add an extra class almost every day. Whether it be an extra music class, painting a mural, or having a catch up period, students and schools would have an amount of flexibility never seen before.

Students across Ontario are being effected. You are being effected. However you also have a voice with the power to change things. You have a choice to make an impact on the society we live in, so do not hesitate.
