This is a petition that asks OHSU to create a new tier or tiers of pay. This would help with retention and recognition of experienced pharmacy techs.

Pharmacy technicians throughout OHSU (the undersigned) would like to propose a three tier, training-based, pay scale that adopts more competitive wages which accurately reflects the varying responsibilities of our employment. This three tier structure would promote personal growth and technician retention.

OHSU prides itself on its diversity as a healthcare employer; however the single tier for pharmacy technicians does not embrace that same mantra of diversity. The amount of responsibility and risk between pharmacy technicians vary greatly across OHSU. Numerous non-pharmacy positions throughout OHSU that have adopted a multi-tiered system. There is currently no motivating factor to grow in any way within the department, given that all pharmacy technicians are assigned to the same pay scale, and will eventually attain the equivalent longevity rate despite either their acquisition, or lack of responsibilities and job risks.

OHSU prides itself on being the best healthcare employer in the region. However the current pay scale is not competitive to other leaders in the industry such as Kaiser Permanente. OHSU has become an entry level stepping stone for pharmacy technicians, and a poaching ground for other healthcare systems. If OHSU could be more competitive in its pay scale by creating skill based tiers, it would build loyalty and a more positive comradery. In addition, it would promote greater respect for our positions, which would positively affect attendance, productivity, and OHSU pride.
