Shoalhaven City Council please support the banning of oil & gas exploration in the Bight

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!

‘The Bight is one of the most pristine wildlife environments in the world and home to 36 whale species including the endangered Southern Right whales.
We might think that the Bight is far enough away, but the reality is that if it goes wrong oil could easily end up on our beaches here in the Shoalhaven. The oil company proposing to carry out the exploratory drilling, Equinor, reveals their own projections which show that if there were a major oil spill, like Deep Water Horizon in Mexico 10 years ago, it could impact anywhere along southern Australia’s coast, from Western Australia right across to our NSW coastline as far north as Byron Bay and around Tasmania. Imagine what that will do to our beaches, wildlife as well as our tourist and fishing industry!

The Treading Lightly group is planning to get Shoalhaven Council on board and to join other councils along the coast to pass a formal motion of concern or opposition to oil drilling in the Bight. To this end, petition lists have been put out at local cafes and shops across town, as well as on here. A minimum 500 signatures are needed for a deposition. We are calling upon everyone in our community to seek one out and sign, or sign here. Lets keep our beaches and ocean pristine and protect what we love. For now, for the future.

I started this petition, because…
We are Treading Lightly in the M.U.D. A group of passionate community members who are volunteering their time and working hard on keeping our precious part of the coast pristine, reducing single use plastics in our community, reducing waste, living more sustainably and supporting local food producers and farmers. We work with the community, Council, NGO’s and Councils to educate our community on ways we can live more consciously, not just for our community but to support tourism in a sustainable, respectful way, and with future generations in mind.
