Today is International Women’s Day 2017 as Sikhs we should be at the forefront of social issues such as Equality for Women, as our Guru's raised their voice against such things over 500 years ago when it was the norm to treat women as inferior in all aspects.
Yet still today in one of our main places of worship - The Golden Temple, Amritsar, women are still not allowed to undertake kirtan (singing of the Sikh Scriptures) within the Golden Temple. This service is purely left to men.
There is no basis for this, if anything the teachings condemn's the treatment of women as inferior. A prime example is a line from a piece of work written by Guru Nanak the first Guru, called Asa Di Vaar (which is read/sung each morning);
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥
So ki▫o manḏā ākẖī▫ai jiṯ jamėh rājān.
So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.
In Sikhism the foundation concept is the oneness of the almighty, meaning all are seen as equal.
The purpose of this petition is to bring about change within the S.G.P.C administration to allow Women to be Equal in all services, we appreciate they have been able to partake in many more voluntary services that previously, were left purely to men, over the years.
However, a landmark gesture would be to allow Women to recite the scriptures and show the world how our Guru's were trailblazers for social reform for the betterment of all.
Not only would this gesture mean we would ourselves live according to the tenets of our faith which we promote to others, alongside bring a shift in mindset throughout India and other countries to do the same.
The International Women's Day organisation have made a campaign for 2017 to #BeBoldForChange, lets be Bold and make a change for the betterment of all.
Please share and sign the petition.
This will be presented to the S.G.P.C once the campaign finishes - we will reach out to various groups to ensure our message is reached with impact.
