Immediate Withdraw of the Open America’s Waters Act of 2017 by Sen. John McCain, R-Az
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
Sen. John McCain, R-Az has once again, directly attacked the 200,000 American Merchant Seafarer and the hundreds of thousands of American workers from Ship Builders, Suppliers, Shippers, Technicians, and many other groups as well as individuals who would be directly affected by any modification or complete repeal of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920.
The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (P.L. 66-261), also known as the Jones Act, is a United States federal statute that provides for the promotion and maintenance of the American merchant marine. Among other purposes, the law regulates maritime commerce in U.S. waters and between U.S. ports. Section 27 of the Jones Act deals with cabotage and requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried on U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.
With this act removed and foreign flagged vessels with foreign crews would put over 200,000 mariners in the United States out of work.
