At Sherwood School in Calgary, Alberta, new rules are coming into effect for the 2019-20 school year. Backpacks will no longer be permitted to be carried around the school during the day and must remain in lockers. This has raised concern amongst students, for several reasons.

For starters, this forces students to go back and forth from class to locker to get their belongings which may result in the student being late for class and taking away from their education. Aside from the 10 minute break between the second and third periods and our lunch break, we have only about 2 minutes between classes and being a large, crowded school, walking to classes takes up all of this time and none can be spared for going through lockers.

Secondly, this makes it difficult for female students on their periods to easily and discreetly transfer sanitary products from their bag to the bathroom. In normal circumstances they could take their bag with them to the bathroom, but with this new rule in place it would require them to open their locker and have what they're doing on display for the whole crowded hallway to see. With no backpack or bag, they'll most likely have to carry their sanitary products to the washroom in their hands for everyone to see - which is simply humiliating.

Another issue is that students rightfully aren't comfortable with leaving their belongings unattended for extended periods of time. If their lock does not work properly, or someone finds their code, their belongings can easily be stolen. Additionally, principals and students' homeroom teachers have access to a code sheet, allowing them access to lockers whenever they so please and search them completely unprompted, meaning these staff in a way have more of a right to search belongings than a trained police officer, who even then needs a warrant. That was a somewhat acceptable practice when students could keep their belongings with them, but forcing students to keep their backpacks in lockers with all their valuables and belongings in them is simply not respecting of students' privacy.

Help convince Principal Tracy Kohan and Assistant Principal Colleen Doyle to allow students to carry their backpacks in school.
