Hello, we are concerned citizens that have been researching the foster care system and its effects on children. Research has shown that foster care is a broken system that often leaves children with lifelong trauma and has a negative impact on kids of all ages. We would like to see the foster care system held accountable and implement stricter policies to protect our children.

We want to see a budget increase for the foster care system in order for children to receive yearly mental and physical health checkups ensuring foster parents are maintaining their duties and taking care of these children. Children are more susceptible to trauma, as they mature, and displacement from their family is extremely traumatic. “25% of foster children experience PTSD (comparable to the rate of U.S. war veterans), and tend to suffer high rates of debilitating depression and low self-esteem.” (Voices For Children). Children also need a secure support system that they can rely on in order to grow and overcome any obstacles they may face. The best way to ensure that foster children have a strong support system is to guarantee that they are receiving proper care, and that their foster parent and home is a safe environment for them to mature.

We are calling on the Ohio Senators, Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman. We would greatly appreciate it if you would sign this petition to bring this pressing matter to our Senators’ attention. No one wants to see children suffering, and by bringing reform to the foster care system we can make a positive step to ensure safety and good health for all children.
