Sherman has seen a surge of new bicycle riders and pedestrians in the past year. Locals are increasingly using bicycles as a form of transportation, and not just for recreation. Many children walk to school, when they could be taking bicycles Which would cut travel times. Many residents find difficulty holding a job because of transportation issues and a bicycle could be the key to their new success.
We need to encourage healthier lifestyles, keep our children safe, and keep rolling forward together. So, how can we accomplish this today without interrupting traffic or making changes to our current road system? Converting the unused train tracks to beautiful hike, bike, and equestrian trails!
There are miles of unused train tracks all over town that take up much needed space, and they are just plain ugly to look at. The cool thing about them is that they connect many Neighborhoods and attractions that would otherwise be disconnected.
Many longtime Sherman residents and public officials have expressed a strong interest in converting these ugly unused trails into bikes and walking paths. Also, the surge in bicycle riders has made national, state, and local news! The Sherman City Council just proclaimed the month of May as Sherman Bicycle Month!!
The city has agreed to reach out to the company that owns the unused rails in an attempt to improve the quality of life for everyone in town.
Please voice your support for this healthy, and much needed initiative by signing this petition and sharing with friends.
