On April 1, 2017, a married couple stopped at a gas station on their way home from a vacation. While his wife wife went inside, the unsuspecting husband was suddenly attacked by a stranger, punching him and leaving open wounds on his face. Upon returning to their vehicle, his wife was spit on by her husband's attacker, who proceeded to hit the couple's car and boat with a hammer, causing extensive damage. The reason behind this seemingly random attack was made clear by the perpetrator, who repeatedly stated throughout the attack that it was motivated by hatred of the victims' race. Despite the clear indication that this was a hate crime, Sheriff Lippa, of the Caroline County Sheriff's Department, has not charged it as such.
It is vastly important that we send a message to law enforcement that we expect perpetrators of hate crimes to be dealt with harshly and show criminals that violence and racism will not be tolerated in our country.
