According to the latest studies, 1 in 5 Ontarians under the age of 17 has a mental health disorder causing significant stress, which impairs their functioning at home, school, with peers or in the community. 17% of children between the ages of 2-5 years old meet diagnostic criteria for mental health problems.
Early Childhood Educators are the first professionals to work with children providing them with the opportunity for early detection and intervention which is key in many cases. We are of the view that ECE students preparing to go into the field have limited knowledge and information on this important topic.
We believe that having a mandatory course in the Early Childhood Education diploma program will help end the stigma attached to mental health and that this topic needs to be given a stronger voice. Children have the right to have access to a knowledgeable educator who is there to support their wellbeing and emotional development.
Join us in urging post-secondary institutions to move the mental health topic to the forefront of our curriculum. Together we can make a difference!
