Issue Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that same-sex marriage was constitutional and was to be legalized nationwide. Already in Alabama, three counties have decided to refuse to issue marriage licenses. This petition is for the occasion that Shelby County refuses to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

On June 26, 2015, SCOTUS ruled that marriage was a constitutional right for every consenting adult. That same day, Gov. Robert Bentley stated that, "I will uphold the law of this nation and this is now the law." Refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Shelby County is unconstitutional, illegal, and could mean that Alabama would face legal consequences from the federal government. It is a civil servant's duty to uphold the laws of the federal government, then those of the state and county, regardless of his or her personal views.
