Anna Zuurmond started this petition to Sheffield Council

Having a food waste bin is one of the most simple and easy ways to reduce food waste. Given the imminence of current ecological crisis’ you would think something as simple as food waste collection was common practise in all local areas. I was therefore greatly surprised to find that Sheffield does not offer as such, despite advertising itself as one of the Greenest, most eco-friendly cities. Many people such as ourselves do not have a garden, and therefore it is not possible to have a compost bin. Collectively this means that every day huge quantities of recyclable waste is going straight into our general black bins to be put into a landfill or incinerated. This is completely avoidable. Yes, we are aware that local budgets are constrained however this should not mean cutting easy environmental practises. There is no reason that my home county of Surrey should offer this, and Sheffield does not.

I spoke to Sheffield council who told me that introducing a food bin was something they were ‘aware of’ and ‘considering’ but there was ‘no timeline’ this. We can therefore conclude it is not being prioritised. Please sign this petition to force Sheffield Council to introduce a food bin to all areas of Sheffield.
