Campaign for Birth Centre in Sheffield for South Yorkshire families

The recent intrapartum NICE guidelines (2014) state that all women should have a choice of place of birth, e.g. home, freestanding midwifery unit, alongside midwifery unit or obstetric unit and also specify that 'commissioners and providers should ensure that all 4 birth settings are available to all women.' Recent research shows that birth centres provide the best care and outcomes for most mothers, babies and families (BirthPlace Study, 2011).
Sheffield is a major city in the UK with over 7000 births a year, yet unlike most other big cities we have no birth centre and only one large central unit. The 'Sheffield Association of Radical Midwives' (ARM) and 'The Sheffield Maternity Service Users Group,' supported by 'Nurture Sheffield' are petitioning the local CCG to provide a freestanding birth centre in Sheffield for local families and we the undersigned support their aims.
