Delay the removal and upgrade of all Street Lighting in the Sharrow Vale Area, Sheffield, S11

Toward the end of April 2015 Sharrow Vale will see the upgrade of its Street Lighting as commissioned by Sheffield City Council and implemented by AMEY. This will include the permanent removal of 83 cast iron lamp posts and their sale for scrap.
Originally gas lamps installed approximately 100 years ago and converted to electric lamps in the 1960-70s they account for almost 50% of the area's lighting.
The Sharrow Vale Community Association and the wider community, including businesses, consider that the loss of the columns is far greater than the monetary value that AMEY would obtain from the scrapping of them; the cast iron columns are integral to the area’s character, this character is pivotal in making our area a destination, which in turn supports the local businesses and creates an attractive and convivial place to live.
Once these columns have been removed they are gone forever.
However, we wish to retain and be proud of our area’s character and charm for years to come. We believe that the existing columns can be renovated and restored with new LED luminaires, conforming to the new specifications that the City Council have set, which will help to preserve our heritage for decades to come.
We are requesting that Sheffield City Council sanction a delay on the roll out of replacing any street lights in the Sharrow Vale area (the area bordered by Psalter Lane, Junction Road, Ecclesall Rd and Bruce Road), while the community seek independent expert analysis and advice and develop alternative proposals to be presented to Sheffield City Council should the analysis deem that the posts can be retained. We hope to achieve this within 3 months.
We also suggest that, in the meantime, the work scheduled for this area be reallocated to the next on the refurbishment plan, where the community will probably be more than happy to have it undertaken.
Your signature on this petition will help us retain our heritage and character and prove to 'the powers that be' within Sheffield City Council that our communities are strong-willed and fiercely proud of what we have and are, and that we will not be rail-roaded into development that has not been consulted upon.
