Keep Sheffield's Birch Avenue Dementia Home with Sheffield NHS

In Birch Avenue Nursing Home, Sheffield, we have one of the few specialist dementia homes for those with severe and complex needs. These, our loved ones, are the most vulnerable in our community. The Home is still staffed by the NHS to excellent standards of care. As the then MP, I was proud to open this facility in 1994 after a long campaign and I have seen its reputation grow since then.
Now it is being put out to tender to save money and we, friends and family of residents, want to see this process put on hold immediately. The current NHS providers, Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust, have our full support. They do an amazing job for these 40 residents in most need from this terrible illness. At a time when dementia is on the increase and families are in crisis, many of us have had our loved ones living in private or other care and know that standards will drop.
We need 6 months to help the key providers, families and staff find a solution. We call on the landlords, South Yorkshire Housing Association and the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in Sheffield to pause the tendering process so as to give stability to the staff, residents and families at Birch Avenue.
