Shasta County Board of Supervisors, Shasta County Public Works Department: Stop spraying Glyphosate (RoundUp) in our County!
Glyphosate, the main ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp - which has been linked to several devastating diseases and been banned in several countries already - is being sprayed on our county roads QUARTERLY .
The Shasta County Public Works Department, as approved by the Shasta County Board of Supervisors, has hired a new company out of CHICO (replacing the previous local company) based soley on bid price to spray our county roads with RoundUp. When they drove by our organic family farm - three months away from Organic Certification and on a "no-spray list" - the drivers stated that they were "lost".
The photo above was taken on Buzzard Roost Road at Oak Run Road on July 9th, 2013, less than two weeks from when the herbicide truck was seen spraying at the same spot.
Upon further investigation and several phone calls it has been confirmed that the Public Works Department sprays this powerful herbicide all along county roads EVERY THREE MONTHS.
These petitions are successful - one Minnesota mom got sprays out of her parks. I say PARKS ARE NOT ENOUGH! DON'T SPRAY MY TOWN!!!
This powerful herbicide detrimentally affects EVERYTHING in it's path; pollutes the air we breathe and the water we drink. We live in this beautiful county to be stewards of our land, not to watch it be contaminated and destroyed by herbicides. As the County Board of Supervisors, you have approved the County Public Works Department to spend over $60,000 annually to spray this herbicide - which is banned in several countries already - on all of our county roads QUARTERLY.
As citizens of Shasta County, (and beyond - all fellow environmentalists worldwide are encouraged to sign this petition) we urge you to be responsible and environmentally conscious representatives and discuss alternative methods to deal with road side vegetation.
Thank you for your consideration on this incredibly important topic.
