Reinstate expert breastfeeding support in Sunderland

Tonight, it has been confirmed that the breastfeeding support network ‘Sunderland Bosom Buddies’ will no longer be managed by Amanda Dunbar and volunteer Peer Supporters. Harrogate Health Service have taken the decision (with no consultation with its service users) to replace Amanda with Nursery Nurses who have no specific breastfeeding training.

Breastfeeding rates in Sunderland are amongst the lowest in the Country, and vital support services such as Bosom Buddies have provided a lifeline to mums (such as myself) who were isolated, struggling or simply wanted to share company with likeminded people. Unfortunately, my fear is that replacing Amanda with Health Visitors and Nursery Nurses will have a drastic detrimental impact on the service. The major benefit of using Peer Supporters has been that these women are relatable and breastfeeding themselves but able to refer people to Amanda, an expert, when needed help which can’t be guaranteed anymore without Amanda.

Bosom Buddies has been ran by Amanda Dunbar, one of few IBCLC certified lactation consultants in the area, for 9 years - who has today been told she is no longer able to offer support to Bosom Buddies, or to her weekly drop in breastfeeding clinic. I reach out to you, in desperation, to help the hundreds of women Amanda has supported to try and assist us in getting Bosom Buddies and Amanda Dunbar reinstated in Sunderland.
