The Bay area has a strong hockey tradition. When the NHL first expanded in 1967, the California Seals were part of the second six teams to enter the NHL. The first event ever held at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (Oracle Arena) was a Seals NHL game.

With the AHL moving all pacific division affiliates to California, among other factors, the time is right for Oakland to revitalize its hockey heritage and regain a professional team. Moving the San Jose Barracuda to Oakland and renaming them as the California Seals (or Golden Seals, or Oakland Seals) is logical for myriad reasons:

-The Barracuda currently play in SAP Center, which does not provide any benefit with regards to growing the sharks brand and hockey in general in further or less established bay area markets which the sharks are not currently touching.

-The Golden State Warriors will be moving out of Oracle Arena in the near future, thus paving the way for a new anchor tenant for the Arena and allowing less logistical issues with regards to the switch or multi-sport tennants.

-By establishing their AHL affiliate in Oakland, the sharks will allow hockey to be significantly more accessible to much of the bay area population who currently are challenged to attend games at SAP center. Oracle Arena is on a BART line and centrally located such that it is easier and more affordable to travel to for residents of Oakland, San Francisco, and surrounding communities than getting to SAP Center which currently requires an extensive trip on caltrain or driving for any east bay, north bay, or San Francisco residents.

-Having the AHL affiliate in close proximity and easy transit access to San Francisco and Oakland provides additional downstream positive effects by allowing an easier to access product for casual fans at a more economical price point than an NHL franchise, which will encourage many first time fans and casual fans to attend games who would ordinarily not due to the prohibitive time, effort, and cost required to go from these two major bay area cities to San Jose. This will allow the Sharks a better ability to effectively grow their brand into new markets and become more ubiquitous throughout the bay area. Further the sharks have many fans in the San Ramon Valley and north up the I-80 corridor in places such as Vacaville and Sacramento that are currently at a disadvantage in getting to San Jose that would no doubt support a franchise in the area.

These are just a few of the many reasons why it is logical from the perspective of all parties involved for the San Jose Barracuda to relocate to Oakland and reclaim a piece of bay area sports and NHL history. Say yes to the California Seals and hockey in Oakland!
